The Destin Fishing Rodeo began in May of 1948 to bring people to Destin. It worked! Destin shortly became known as a summer tourist destination and “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village”.
The Rodeo founders, people such as Howard Marler, Jewel Melvin and Willie Marler, decided that moving the Rodeo to October would lengthen the tourist season another month. Today the Rodeo is held October 1- 31.

The Captains & Their Fleet
Captain Joey
Joey developed a passion for fishing at a young age, learning the ropes from his dad and “Gramps.” At just 15, Joey was hired as an independent mate, one of the youngest ever on a well-known fishing charter boat in the Destin Harbor. Then, Joey decided to obtain his 100 Ton Captain License at the age of 18.
In 2013, after being the captain of several other vessels, Joey decided to open his own charter fishing company, Panhandle Fishing Charters. Capt. Joey prides himself on safety, service, and customer satisfaction and looks forward to providing each customer with a memorable experience on the beautiful waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Choctawhatchee Bay.
Capt. Joey has the following credentials to run a safe and smooth charter:
- 100 Ton Captain License
- USCG Certified
- Maritime Consortium Drug Card
- CPR Certified
Captain Adam
Capt. Adam grew up in Indiana freshwater fishing as a kid. He moved to Destin in 2010 and began his adventure in saltwater fishing on a party boat in Destin. From there, he moved on to blue water fishing offshore on larger vessels. Between 2010 and 2014, he had done it all, so then he decided to obtain his Captain’s License. He worked with other inshore companies between 2014 and 2017 and ultimately decided to join Panhandle Fishing Charters. Capt. Adam has been with the business for two years and is a huge part of what makes our company successful. He specializes in light tackle gulf fishing and bow fishing. He’s been bow fishing for 15 years and can teach the beginners how to successfully bow fish. Capt. Adam truly enjoys being on the water and you can tell by the smile he has on his face the entirety of the trip!

Our 2013 Skeeter SX240 is the boat that helped start Panhandle Fishing Charters. This boat is used for our Kids, Gulf, and Bay Fishing Trips. Additionally, it can be used for Daytime Bow Fishing.
