What’s Biting in Destin in October? An Inshore Fishing Report

October is one of those months that reminds us why we love fishing Destin.

The summer heat starts to ease, bait moves through the bays and passes, and inshore fish become increasingly active as they prepare for the cooler months ahead. For anglers looking to spend a day on the water without heading miles offshore, October offers plenty of opportunities around Destin’s bays, flats, passes and nearshore waters.

So, what’s biting in Destin in October?

Here’s what we’re watching for this month.

Redfish: One of October’s Big Attractions

If redfish are on your list, October is a great month to be on the water.

As fall settles in, redfish become increasingly active throughout the Destin area. You may find them around passes, shallow flats, shorelines and other areas where bait is moving.

And then there are the big ones.

October can bring some impressive bull redfish into the passes and surrounding waters. These oversized reds are catch-and-release fish, but they provide exactly the kind of fight that makes an inshore trip memorable.

For anglers looking for a hard-fighting fish on relatively light tackle, redfish are always a favorite.

Florida’s current Panhandle recreational regulations allow one redfish per person per day, with an 18–27 inch slot limit and a maximum of four fish per vessel.

Speckled Trout Are Still on the Menu

Speckled trout remain another popular target while October fishing in Destin

Fall weather and changing water temperatures can move trout into different areas throughout the month, so finding them is often about paying attention to water conditions, bait and current.

Grass flats, deeper edges, channels and other areas holding bait can all become productive.

The best part?

Trout can provide plenty of action while still giving anglers a legitimate shot at bringing home some fresh Gulf Coast table fare.

As of 2026, recreational spotted seatrout in Florida’s Panhandle are open during October. The current regulations include a 15–19 inch slot limit, a three-fish daily bag limit per person, and an allowance for one fish over 19 inches per vessel.

Flounder: Fall Means Moving Fish

October is also a month to watch for flounder.

As water temperatures change, flounder begin their seasonal movements toward the passes and Gulf. That can make October an especially interesting time for anglers who enjoy targeting these distinctive flatfish.

Look for them around sandy bottoms, channels, structure and areas where baitfish are moving.

Flounder can be a little different from chasing a fast-moving predator. Sometimes the bite is subtle, but finding them and putting one in the boat makes for a rewarding day on the water.

Spanish Mackerel Can Still Make Things Interesting

Don’t be surprised if a few Spanish mackerel show up during an October trip.

Fall doesn’t automatically mean the fast-moving pelagics disappear overnight. Depending on conditions and bait activity, Spanish mackerel can still provide some serious action around passes and nearshore waters.

They’re fast, aggressive and more than capable of making an otherwise relaxed morning suddenly very exciting.

Follow the Bait

One of the biggest keys to October fishing is simple:

Find the bait, and you’ll often find the fish.

As the seasons change, baitfish movements can concentrate predators in specific areas. Birds working the surface, bait breaking the water and visible feeding activity can all provide clues about what’s happening below.

But fishing isn’t always about what you can see.

Tides, wind, water temperature, current and recent weather can all change where fish want to be from one day to the next. That’s where local knowledge becomes important.

What Makes October Fishing in Destin Different?

There’s something about fall fishing on the Emerald Coast.

The crowds begin to thin out. The temperatures are more comfortable. The mornings can be crisp, the water can be beautiful, and the fish are feeding with the changing season.

And unlike the middle of summer, you don’t necessarily have to spend the entire day trying to beat the heat.

Whether your goal is putting a redfish on the line, chasing speckled trout across the flats, looking for flounder or simply getting the family out on the water, October gives you plenty of options.
