The Destin Cobia season began with a bang! The Full Pull, a Destin native boat, reeled in the first Cobia of the 2018 season on March 5. The Cobia weighed 72.6 pounds which is a GREAT start to the Destin Cobia season. The Destin Cobia season offers multiple tournaments throughout the area. One of the most popular in Destin is the Cobia World Championships through Harbor Docks. Many boats participate for the monetary prizes that each tournament has to offer.
Panhandle Fishing Charters entered the Destin Flathead Classic last year through Boshamps Seafood and Oyster House on the Destin Harbor. The Destin Flathead Classic is a four day tournament that offers a variety of entrance categories. The categories offered are Dink of the Week, Overall Weight, Ladies Division, Big Fish, 26′ and under, and the Daily biggest fish. We competed in the 26′ and under category and unfortunately, did not make it onto the leader board; however, we missed Dink of the Week by two ounces. There were 52 boats that fished this tournament and a lot of competition, so missing the leader board by two ounces felt like a trophy in itself. We will push through for this year and hopefully the weather cooperates a little better this year. The rules and regulations will be changed this year allowing for a more fair competition between the larger boats and the 26′ and under.
If you’re in the area during the weigh-ins in April – come enjoy a Destin sunset overlooking the Harbor while enjoying a cold beer, a family atmosphere, and trophy fish being weighed in. The Destin Cobia season is here, so wish us luck!!
