Destin Fishing Report: May 1

Destin Fishing Report: May 1 – you can find the lengthier version of this at Half Hitch’s website.

Panhandle Fishing Charters fishes State Waters only; therefore must follow the FWC Rules and Regulations for State Waters.

Trolling: King Mackerel are good on the reefs and wrecks to the east and west of the pass at about 65-150ft depths; we use live cigar minnows or troll hard baits. Spanish Mackerel are still out there, but will disperse as the water warms with the approaching Destin Summer.

Cobia Fishing: We’re entering the last couple of weeks of Cobia season; although, there will be a few here and there throughout May and June.

Bottom Fishing:Trigger Fish and Mingo Snapper are the bulk of the catch right now. Amberjack opened in State Waters today (May1!) Red Snapper was approved for opening on June 11!

Surf Fishing/Gulf Fishing: The Pompano bite is still great using peeled fresh shrimp, Sand Fleas, or Fishbites. We’ve had the best luck on Shrimp. You can hook up on a variety of shark after dark on cut mullet or Bonito.

Bay Fishing: Trout and Red Fish are still consistent; during the middle of the day on live shrimp towards the flats. We’re having luck with Black Drum on Shrimp at the bridges.

Thanks Half Hitch Tackle of Destin for supplying the latest fishing reports from Panama City, Destin, and Navarre!

Tight Lines,

Capt. Joey
